Contracts awarded for water works

Qatar's water consumption is poised to grow at an astonishing rate of about 50% in the next two years, said Second Deputy Premier and Minister of Energy and Industry HE Abdullah bin Hamad al-Attiyah.
Al-Attiyah said this while briefing journalists after awarding of contracts worth QR481mn to four companies for undertaking works pertaining to upgrading of water network, laying of new pipelines, replacement of approximately 54km of network, and building of pumping stations across the country.
The minister said the growth of about 50% in water consumption would in all probability create a world record of sorts. This is because of the massive industrial and construction activity that the country is witnessing.
“With many more new projects are already underway and some are on the pipeline, demand for water is expected to shoot up further in the coming years," said the minister.

Making herself at home

Even if she didn't like fancy coffees, Fort Wayne attorney Tandra S. Johnson would still think her new office is in the most wonderful spot in town.

Never mind that her desk is in a spot where a toilet used to be.

"Oh it's great, isn't it?" she exclaims, her eyes widening when reminded that the new downtown Starbucks is just across the street from the building where she now sees clients.

But even more splendid than lattes just a few short steps away, Johnson says, is that she now has a warm and inviting space to work in the late Victorian-era mansion she's been restoring at 529 W. Jefferson Blvd.

"I spend a lot of time with my practice, so I spend a lot of time at the office," she says – something of an understatement, given that Johnson specializes in family law and oversees potentially time-consuming conflicts involving divorces and child custody.

New Home Construction Drops 6% in August

WASHINGTON - Housing construction plunged in August, falling to the lowest level in more than three years as the once-booming industry showed further signs of a dramatic slowdown.

The Commerce Department reported Tuesday that construction of new homes and apartments fell by 6 percent, the third consecutive decline and a much bigger setback than analysts had been forecasting.

The weakness pushed the annual rate for construction down to 1.665 million units, the slowest pace since April 2003.

Meanwhile, wholesale prices edged up a modest 0.1 percent in August, and outside of energy and food, prices actually fell for a second straight month. That hadn't occurred in more than three years, the Labor Department said.

Analysts said the slowdown in inflation should reassure the Federal Reserve that it can continue to keep interest rates on hold.
