  CREW Roundtable

Five CREW Seattle members joined us for a roundtable recently to share some personal insight into their careers in commercial real estate. All are preeminent leaders in their respective fields.

Q: What motivated you to enter the commercial real estate field and what motivates you to stay?

TAYLOR: What continually motivates me in the field of architecture is my love and passion for what I do.

A teacher suggested architecture when I told him that I wanted my degree in interior design. Touring my first school of architecture, it was love at first sight. After receiving my masters' degree, I worked on large corporate headquarters in New York as a draftsperson. Within a few months, I was asked to be a job captain on the 300,000-square-foot headquarters for Continental Can.

Man injured in fall at construction site

A construction worker was injured in a fall from a Hollywood building under construction Saturday -- at least the third such accident this week.

Hollywood Fire-Rescue spokesman Matt Phillips said the worker fell at about 3:45 p.m. from some scaffolding at a building that is under construction at 2227 N. Federal Hwy.

''He fell approximately, from what dispatch told me, 30 feet,'' Phillips said.

The man, whose name and age were not immediately known, was taken by ambulance to Memorial Regional Hospital in Hollywood.

On Wednesday, pipe fitter Clay Fletcher Sr. of Tennessee died after falling 40 feet from the new casino under construction at the Pompano Park racetrack in Pompano Beach.

The federal Occupational Safety and Health Administration is investigating that accident.

Contracts awarded for water works

Qatar's water consumption is poised to grow at an astonishing rate of about 50% in the next two years, said Second Deputy Premier and Minister of Energy and Industry HE Abdullah bin Hamad al-Attiyah.
Al-Attiyah said this while briefing journalists after awarding of contracts worth QR481mn to four companies for undertaking works pertaining to upgrading of water network, laying of new pipelines, replacement of approximately 54km of network, and building of pumping stations across the country.
The minister said the growth of about 50% in water consumption would in all probability create a world record of sorts. This is because of the massive industrial and construction activity that the country is witnessing.
“With many more new projects are already underway and some are on the pipeline, demand for water is expected to shoot up further in the coming years," said the minister.

Feds OK Berlin prison plan

Another step forward for the proposed $218 million North Country federal prison project came yesterday, after word from Washington, D.C., that the Federal Bureau of Prisons gave its blessing for construction to commence on the sprawling Berlin site.

"It's about time, and you can add some exclamation points to that statement," Berlin Mayor Bob Danderson said last night.

Yesterday's action was the culmination of a lengthy environmental impact study of the 500-acre site. The next step is to award a construction contract by spring. Once ground is broken, construction is expected to take about three years.

"We are now one step closer to diversifying our economy. The jobs we're creating in the construction phase and the permanent jobs bringing younger people into the community will reverse the tide of the trend we're seeing of so many young people leaving the area for lack of jobs," Danderson said.
