The Mower County Board of Commissioners will hold a public hearing to help decide whether to assist the Hormel Foundation financially in the $20 million Hormel Institute building project.Judging by the county commissioners' quick action Tuesday afternoon, they are eager to hold the hearing and assist the project. The county is prepared to offer a $5 million construction loan for the Hormel Institute project.The hearing to take public input about the proposal will take place 11 a.m. Tuesday, Oct. 24, during a regular meeting of the commissioners.Donna Welsh, the county finance director, presented a plan to fund the $5 million construction loan. The money will come from undesignated reserves set aside for retirees' insurance.Mahlon Schneider, a Hormel Foundation director, and Gail Dennison, Hormel Institute public relations specialist, pitched the proposal to the commissioners.The Hormel Institute, a research unit of the University of Minnesota, announced the $20 million renovation and expansion project at ground-breaking ceremonies held Aug.
