Home construction, sales projected to decline this year

Given the Pittsburgh region's slow pace of employment growth and declining population, it's not all surprising that the housing market is due for a slowdown.

"The area's weak rate of household formation limits growth of housing demand, and higher mortgage rates have helped further soften demand growth," noted the August economic forecast for the seven-county region by the Economics Division of PNC Financial Services Group.

PNC is projecting a 5.4 percent decline in housing construction for 2006 -- to 5,300 units versus 5,601 units last year -- based on its analysis of housing permit application data from the U.S. Census Bureau, according to Richard Moody, a PNC regional economist.

That includes a drop of about 8 percent -- 4,300 units versus 4,672 units -- in the larger, single-family segment of the market covering Allegheny, Armstrong, Beaver, Butler, Fayette, Washington and Westmoreland counties.

Making herself at home

Even if she didn't like fancy coffees, Fort Wayne attorney Tandra S. Johnson would still think her new office is in the most wonderful spot in town.

Never mind that her desk is in a spot where a toilet used to be.

"Oh it's great, isn't it?" she exclaims, her eyes widening when reminded that the new downtown Starbucks is just across the street from the building where she now sees clients.

But even more splendid than lattes just a few short steps away, Johnson says, is that she now has a warm and inviting space to work in the late Victorian-era mansion she's been restoring at 529 W. Jefferson Blvd.

"I spend a lot of time with my practice, so I spend a lot of time at the office," she says – something of an understatement, given that Johnson specializes in family law and oversees potentially time-consuming conflicts involving divorces and child custody.

City of Oxnard Deploys BridgeWave GigE Links to Clear Construction ...

SANTA CLARA, Calif.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--BridgeWave Communications, Inc. announces that the City of Oxnard, California has installed four BridgeWave GE60 gigabit wireless bridges to ensure network continuity throughout city building reconstruction. BridgeWave point-to-point wireless links connect LANs between buildings at full-rate Gigabit Ethernet LAN speeds, with the security and reliability of fiber cabling.

"I needed a fiber alternative solution that could be quickly implemented, would support the rigid building construction plans and avoid any potential fiber cuts that might be caused by the heavy equipment moving around the area. Backhoes and bulldozers are threats to any terrestrial fiber connection and my team did not have the time or money to install alternative fiber routes," stated Tara Willis, the City's IT Systems Administrator.
