Phoenix and Arizona State University officials are making progress in their effort to move the Walter Cronkite School of Journalism to ASU's new downtown Phoenix campus. The city recently announced that it has selected and is now negotiating with Tempe-based Sundt Construction Inc. to design and build the academic space. And last week, both Phoenix Mayor Phil Gordon and ASU President Michael Crow said they were confident the property would be ready when the campus' second phase opens in fall 2008. .
Lucknow, December 27: Long traffic jams and unruly crowd! This is how the city is bolstering its identity by each passing day and Wednesday was no different. With the construction and repair work in progress in many parts of the city, the commuters had a harrowing time, particularly during the rush hours. There was a major jam at the Sankalp Vatika tri-crossing and Bandha Road due to the ongoing road construction work there. The barricades were put up and building material scattered on the road. I was left stranded for around 20 minutes before I managed to find another way to my shop, said Surendra Kumar who got stuck here this morning. They (construction agencies) do not even bother to put up proper signboards to avoid public inconvenience, he rued. A guard who was at the spot trying to handle the traffic admitted it was not an easy task.
The RiverPlace condominium project planned for downtown is on schedule for an early 2007 groundbreaking. Developer Richard Preis says his team spent the past 10 months regrouping to assess the rapid increase in construction costs that occurred post-Katrina and Rita and re-engineering the building in an effort to keep costs down. "When you're dealing with a $70 million to $80 million project, there are a lot of moving parts," Preis says. "We want to do this slow and right." There has been no final decision on how tall RiverPlace will be; at one point the tower was set to be taller than the state Capitol. But Preis says the 119-unit development will continue to have all the amenities promised earlier, such as a pool, fitness center and clubroom. "We're going to keep the Windsor Court atmosphere," he says.
