Credit unions now offering SBA loans

Texas Trophies will be expanding this month, thanks to a construction loan from Security Service Federal Credit Union that was secured through the U.S. Small Business Administration.

San Antonio-based Security Service began offering small business loans in 1995, but it wasn't until just a few years ago that federal credit unions could offer SBA loans. Now, Security Service is an industry leader.

"There's only six credit unions in Texas doing SBA loans now," said Security Service spokesman John Worthington. "We're ranked No.1 in Texas and we're 15th out of 98 nationally."

The owners of Texas Trophies — Lorraine and Jesse Pope — said their experience getting an SBA loan through Security Service was better than it was when they went through a conventional bank for an SBA loan to build their first shop in 1993.

St. Francis waives construction permit fees to lure homeowners

That's why, says Mayor Al Richards, the Milwaukee suburb is experimenting with a program that waives construction permit fees.

Richards and others say it's an incentive for homeowners to stay in the area and add-on to their homes when they decide they need more room.

City Administrator Ralph Voltner says about one-third of the city's homes are between 700 and 900 square feet. So while there are plenty of ritzy condos and townhomes, he says there's room to grow.

And that's why he made the proposal, which was approved in August.

To qualify for the fee waivers, construction costs must be at least half of the assessed value of the home.

Savings can be big. For example, the savings from waiving costs for plumbing, electrical, heating and A-C and building can be from one-thousand to 25-hundred dollars.

Ailene Voisin: Orlando has the arena know-how

The NBA's list of arena-challenged cities is on the cusp of losing one of its own: the Orlando Magic. Contrary to years of speculation, with the moving vans allegedly having mapped out routes to Kansas City, St. Louis, Anaheim, etc., the one-time expansion franchise is neither disappearing nor preparing to fulfill another city's wildest fantasy.

Grant Hill. Dwight Howard. Our old friend Hedo Turkoglu.

Barring a last-second collision over, say, naming rights, central Florida's NBA stars will continue to share the neighborhood with Mickey, Minnie and the gang, though in more spacious, luxurious digs.
