Police charged a Cedar Rapids man with burglary and assault after he allegedly displayed a knife to a resident inside a Coralville apartment. The resident then chased the man outside, where the attacker allegedly attempted to run the resident over with his vehicle on Oct. 1, authorities reported.

A resident at the apartment told police he and his roommate were inside their apartment, 953 Boston Way, when Mitchell Gallo, 27, came to the apartment to pick up some belongings, according to a police complaint signed Oct. 1.

Gallo was told to wait in the hallway, but he entered the apartment and, reportedly displaying a knife, attacked one of the men, officers reported.

That resident then chased Gallo from the apartment, police said. Gallo then got into his car, allegedly attempted to run over the resident, and crashed into the stairs of the building, authorities said.

China to Curb Investment, Loan Growth, Ma Kai Says (Update1)

Oct. 10 (Bloomberg) -- China will focus on measures to curb excessive growth in investment and loans and tackle the widening trade deficit in the second half, said Ma Kai, the nation's top economic planner.

Measures are needed to avoid accelerated economic growth that might lead to overheating, Ma, minister of China's National Development and Reform Commission, said in a statement on its Web site.

China's government is stepping up efforts to cool a credit- fuelled investment boom after economic growth accelerated to the fastest pace in more than a decade in the second quarter. The World Bank said in August that failure to control investment could leave the world's fourth-largest economy with idle plants, falling profits and rising bad loans.

``While recent data has shown some easing in the economy, it has been marginal and the government is unlikely to take its foot off the brake anytime soon,'' said Tai Hui, an economist at Standard Chartered Bank in Hong Kong.

Exactly one month later, on December 15th is when the 30th and Covell project will probably be done...

Construction manager builds homes, reaches out to people

When she was living in Kansas City, Kan., and working at various trade jobs, Christy Shipley would volunteer with Habitat for Humanity whenever she could.

She liked working at construction-type jobs and she loved the people she got to work with. But there was never enough time to volunteer.

Five years ago, she decided to move from Kansas to Eastern Iowa.

And one day about five months ago, she learned about an opening as a construction manager with the Iowa Valley Habitat for Humanity in Iowa City. It's one of about four paid positions with location. She said it was "the icing on the cake."

"The job sounded to me as something right up my alley," said Shipley, 42, of Clarence.

"Habitat is all about a hand up, not a hand out.

Hindu forces demolish protestant Church under construction ...

Activists of Hindu Jagaran Manch (front to awaken Hindus) and tribal groups associated with it pulled down a church being built on private property in Taapi, a village in Jharkhand. Later, during a meeting they held at the site of the demolished church, several Hindu leaders criticized Cardinal Telesphore Placidus Toppo of Ranchi.

One of the activists, Suman Kumar, told the gathering that Church activities in Jharkhand have increased since Cardinal Toppo's elevation. Church groups have extended their work to areas where no Christians live, he added.

Cardinal Toppo became the first tribal Asian cardinal upon his elevation in 2003. He heads the archdiocese based in Ranchi, the state capital, 1,160 kilometers southeast of New Delhi. Taapi is 25 kilometers north of Ranchi.
